Cheesy Ham and Potato Gateau

A lot of Italian cuisine seems to be pasta, pasta, and more pasta. However there are so many different possibilities with Italian cuisines. A real crowd pleaser for sure is this cheesy ham and potato gateau. Gateau is a word from the French cuisine and is translated to cake. Although this dish has French connotations, it is a classic dish from Neapolitan cuisine.

This dish is loaded with ham and mozzarella cheese and is meant to be eaten like a pie. It features at breaded top crust giving it a crusty top with a soft, mashed potato filling in the middle. A delicious upgrade from traditional mashed potatoes that incorporates ham and mozzarella cheese with a pie like structure with a semi-hard crust.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 potatoes

  • 8 oz of diced Mozzarella

  • 1/2 cup of bread crumbs

  • 1 cup of diced ham

  • 1/2 cup of grated parmigiano reggiano cheese

  • salt as needed

  • pepper as needed

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1 tbsp of butter

  • 1 egg

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 375F
  • Wash and peel the outer skin of the potatoes.
  • Bring a large pot of water to boil.
  • Once the water is boiling, add the potatoes.
  • Boil the potatoes for 20 minutes.
  • Once the potatoes are finished boiling, strain them and place them into a large bowl.
  • Mash the potatoes either using a mashing tool or a mixer.
  • Add the milk and butter and keep mixing.
  • Add the ham, mozzarella, egg, and parmigiano reggiano cheese. Mix together well.
  • Place the mix into a deep baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Sprinkle the bread crumbs on top evenly.
  • Bake for 30 minutes in the oven.
  • Once it is finished, let the gateau cool down for approximately 20-30 minutes and then serve. Buon Appetito.
